How should I introduce the bells to my pet?
Day 1-2 -Show the bells to your pet without ringing them, offer a favourite treat. Ring the bells quietly, offer treat. Repeat a few times. Day 2-3 -Ring the bells louder when your pet is at a distance, give a treat. Attach the bells to your pet, give treat, take bells off. Repeat a few times. Day 3-4 -Attach bells to your pet, give a treat and let them wear them for up to 30 min. Take bells off, give a treat. Repeat a couple times. Day 4-5 - As long as your pet is not showing any aversive reaction to wearing the bells, you can then wear them as necessary. The bells should only be worn when needed, not all day long.
Can the bells damage my cat or dogs hearing?
No, studies regarding safety of sound on pets suggest that our bells are within the safe sound range. Our own pets have worn these for years and have never seemed bothered by the sound. We suggest following our best practice guidelines (above) for introducing the bells to your pet. If after this your pet shows signs of discomfort, you should remove the bells.
From how far can you hear the bells?
The bells can be heard up to 100 yards away, depending on their size and the environment you're in. The larger the bell, the louder it is and the further away you will hear it. In areas with high background noise (eg traffic) or sound obstacles (think trees or buildings) we recommend our sets of double bells which have a more intense sound.
How can I keep the bells looking good?
Real copper develops a patina over time making the bells look darker and duller You can bring back their original shine by giving them a clean, rubbing on some ketchup, leave for a minute, rinse, dry et voila.
